The Office of Student Diversity Programs and Services (SDPS) was established in May of 2006 to provide programs and services that focus on student development and inclusion in the campus and the Nevada community.
Our office engages, empowers, and partners with students to develop co-curricular programs and activities to foster an inclusive and diverse community. We:
- Advocate for all students
- Celebrate and honor diversity
- Educate the student campus community
- Aid in student persistence
- Actively support all students in realizing their academic, civic, and personal potential
- Foster in- and out-of-class learning in diversity through a co-curricular agenda
- Promote a healthy, respectful institutional climate
- Engage students as both participants and program partners who honor the contributions of all student populations
- Actively support all students in realizing their academic, civic, and personal potential
All our programming and service efforts fall under five distinct areas:
- Social/Educational Training: Through training and educational and social programs, students are able to develop their cultural identities and establish meaningful relationships within the campus community while gaining knowledge of diversity issues and becoming more culturally aware.
- Advocacy: To develop programs and services that promote students' learning and understanding of principled dissent, civic engagement, and self-advocacy in order to increase persistence and activism.
- Community Development: To develop bridging activities that promote relationships, knowledge, and communication between majority culture students and underrepresented students, with the intention of creating student coalitions that advocate for nonviolent progressive change.
- Support Services: To facilitate an atmosphere through direct advising, support, and collaboration in which students can respond to challenges and opportunities specific to their individual identity development.
- Leadership: To intentionally develop student leadership skills through student organizational advising, cultural leadership training, and individual skill building and empowerment.
